South Ayrshire Women’s Aid (SAWA) established in 2008 and located in Ayr, is a registered charity and company, committed to supporting women and children experiencing domestic abuse throughout the South Ayrshire area. The organisation provide support, information, advocacy and safe, secure accommodation for women, children and young people with experience of domestic abuse.
Over the past few years SAWA has been securing funding to re-develop their refuge into individual flats, to enable them to provide modern emergency accommodation for upto eight women and families. The full project cost will be in the region of £600,000 with over £500,000 of funding secured to date. South Ayrshire Women’s Aid was awarded £10,000 in May 2018 to contribute to the costs of the re-development, with an additional £10,000 awarded in October 2020.
Shirley Middleditch, Manager, South Ayrshire Women’s Aid said “South Ayrshire Women’s Aid would like to thank Carrick Futures for its very generous award of £10,000 which will help us to ensure that our communal refuge is converted to much needed individual flats for the vulnerable families that we support. Once the work is complete, the difference that this will make to families will be tremendous as it will allow them to feel safe, secure and supported in accommodation that is more in line with ‘normal’ living as they will have their own cooking and living facilities to allow them to recover from their experience of domestic abuse”.
