Carrick Communities Celebrate Funding Awards
Five community groups across South Carrick are celebrating being awarded funding through the Carrick Futures Fund in its latest funding round. A total of £54,574 was awarded to projects that work to support communities across the area, from Girvan to Ballantrae.
Among the projects supported was a grant of £24,200 to the Girvan based group, Stepping Stones for Families, to contribute to two years of staff costs for the Carrick Money Advice Service project. The project gives free, impartial and confidential advice on a range of money related matters, in addition to a family support service.
Nikki Pitt, Service Manager, Stepping Stones for Families said:
“Stepping Stones for Families, Carrick Money Advice Service are delighted to have received support from Carrick Futures. This will help us to sustain the important work with local families. We pride ourselves on working closely with the communities to understand their needs and to address disadvantage and poverty. Currently due to Covid-19 we are working differently to support our children, families and young people. As well as income maximisation we are providing activity and food packs where there is an identified need. The feedback from the families has been very positive so far, it is helping with more positive relationships, reducing stress and helping to alleviate mental health difficulties.”
First time applicant Girvan Men’s Shed received an award of £3,026. The grant will enhance the entrance to the Hamilton Park grounds making it more attractive and welcoming with planters and plants and which is part of a wider sensory garden project which has also received match funding from other local community benefit funds.
David Young, Project Manager, Girvan Men’s Shed said:
“Ironically, Girvan Men's shed was set up to provide a facility for isolated men to socialise together in an informal atmosphere and help challenge and reduce the 'Mental Health' issues that isolation causes; unfortunately Covid19 has caused enforced isolation and the temporary closing down of Girvan Men's Shed. The grant award from Carrick Futures for our gardening project will not only rejuvenate the Shedders when Lockdown is finally lifted but will also provide the Shedders with a focus, while allowing them to re-engage with the communities and friends previously made.”
Other successful projects include £9,680 to Girvan Primary Parent Council to contribute to the Balance Outdoor project; £15,000 to Ballantrae Trust towards the planned community purchase of the Kings Arms Hotel, Ballantrae; and £1,868 to Girvan Rainbows and Brownies for Girl Guiding resources.
